Previously: When border guard Mark investigated an elderly woman's daily crossings, he expected a smuggling plot. Instead, her final burlap sack revealed a shocking secret that connected them forever.

The Suspicion Deepens

Over the next three weeks, Clara’s daily crossings became a routine. Every evening at the exact same hour, she would arrive with her bicycle and her sack of grain. While Mark grew fond of the gentle woman, his partner, Dave, grew increasingly suspicious. Dave was a hardened officer who believed everyone had a hidden motive. "Nobody crosses a border every single day just to transport grain, Mark," Dave argued one afternoon. "She is smuggling something valuable, and we are letting her walk right past us."

The next evening, Dave insisted on a thorough search. When Clara arrived, Dave intercepted her, roughly grabbing the bicycle and dumping the golden grain onto a large plastic tarp. Clara stood by, clutching her headscarf, her eyes welling with tears as Dave searched the hollow metal frame of the bicycle, inspected her worn-out shoes, and scanned her clothes with a metal detector. To Dave's immense frustration, he found absolutely nothing. The grain was pure, and the bicycle was just a cheap, rusted frame.

Despite the humiliation, Clara returned the following day. This time, Mark stepped in to conduct the search, wanting to spare her from Dave's aggressive tactics. As Mark plunged his gloved hand into the burlap sack, his fingers brushed against a hard, cold object hidden deep at the very bottom. His heart leaped into his throat. He looked up and met Clara's gaze. She looked terrified, silently pleading with him with her eyes. Mark knew that reporting this would mean her immediate arrest. Instead, he made a split-second decision. He slipped his hand out, leaving the object hidden, and tapped the sack shut.

"Alright. Go ahead," Mark announced, opening the gate.

But Dave had been watching closely from the guardhouse. Seeing the tension in the air, Dave stepped out, his hand resting on his holster. "I know you found something, Mark," Dave growled. "If you won't do your job, I will." Dave grabbed his car keys and headed for his patrol vehicle, determined to chase Clara down.
