Previously: Every day, an elderly woman crossed the border with a simple sack of barley. But when a ruthless commander ordered a search, a young guard discovered the devastating truth.

The Shadow of Suspicion

Within a few weeks, Ruth’s evening crossing became a daily ritual. Every evening at the exact same hour, just as the sun dipped below the horizon, the rhythmic squeak of her old bicycle would echo down the dirt path. And every single time, she carried the same heavy burlap sack filled with barley. Thomas always performed the search, and he always found the exact same thing: nothing but grain. Yet, a nagging suspicion began to gnaw at him. Why would an elderly woman risk her health to transport cheap barley across an international border every single day?

The other guards mocked Thomas, calling him the protector of the grain. But the laughter died when Sergeant Miller, a notoriously ruthless commander, arrived for an unannounced inspection. Miller was a man who saw criminals in every shadow and took pleasure in destroying lives for the sake of his record. When the familiar sound of Ruth’s squeaking bicycle drifted through the chilly air, Miller’s eyes narrowed instantly.

"Who is that?" Miller demanded, his hand resting on the holster of his sidearm.

"Just an old woman from the valley, sir," Thomas replied, his heart rate spiking. "She carries barley from her small plot. I search it every day. It's clean."

Miller sneered, stepping out of the guard shack as Ruth approached the barrier. "An old woman doesn't walk miles in the freezing cold for pennies' worth of barley, Thomas. You're either incredibly stupid, or you're taking bribes."

Ruth stopped, her face turning pale as she looked at the imposing figure of the commander. Miller didn't bother checking the sack. Instead, he grabbed the frame of the bicycle, shaking it violently. A heavy, dull clink echoed from the hollow metal tubes. Miller smiled, a cruel, victorious grin spreading across his face.

"Get the tools," Miller ordered Thomas. "We're cutting this bike open. And if you don't do it, I'll charge you as her accomplice."

Ruth looked at Thomas, tears welling in her eyes. She reached out, her frail hand gripping Thomas’s sleeve. "Please," she whispered, her voice cracking. "My husband... it's all I have left of him."
