Previously: When Chloe was publicly shamed on a crowded subway for not giving up her seat, she silently pulled back her hood. The truth left the entire train in tears.

A Ghost from the Past

The sudden revelation sent a shockwave of shame through the crowded subway car. Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as her face drained of color. The very commuters who had previously ignored the tension now turned on Clara, whispering harsh criticisms and shaking their heads in disgust. Overwhelmed by the sudden influx of pitying stares, Chloe couldn't bear to stay on the train for another second. As soon as the doors screeched open at the next station, she stumbled out onto the cold, concrete platform, tears streaming down her face.

But the ordeal wasn't over. Behind her, the frantic click of heels echoed against the tiled walls.

"Wait! Please, stop!" Clara's voice cried out, stripped of its previous malice.

Chloe turned around, bracing herself for a defensive apology. Instead, Clara rushed forward and grabbed Chloe's hands with a desperate, trembling grip. Her eyes searched Chloe’s pale face with a frantic intensity that bordered on hysteria.

"Please, you must tell me," Clara sobbed, her voice cracking. "What was your mother's name? Was it Eleanor?"

Chloe froze, her heart stopping in her chest. Eleanor was indeed her mother's name—a woman who had passed away five years ago, leaving behind a past shrouded in secrecy and unanswered questions. Chloe tried to pull away, confused and frightened by the older woman’s sudden desperation.

"How do you know my mother?" Chloe demanded, her voice shaking.

With shaking fingers, Clara reached into her purse and pulled out a faded, worn photograph. She held it out to Chloe. It was a picture of a teenage Eleanor, smiling brightly beside a younger, happier Clara. Clara looked up at Chloe, her eyes filled with a lifetime of regret.

"I am your grandmother," Clara whispered, her knees nearly buckling. "I cast Eleanor out when she chose to raise you alone. I have spent twenty years searching for her to beg for her forgiveness... and now, I find you like this."
