The sudden silence in the subway car was deafening. The passengers who had been whispering in agreement with Irene now looked away in deep shame. Irene herself stood paralyzed, her accusing finger trembling in the air. Ruby, unable to bear the heavy atmosphere for another second, grabbed her small bag as the train screeched to a halt at her station. She pushed past the stunned older woman and rushed out onto the concrete platform, tears streaming down her pale face.

But the encounter wasn't over. As Ruby hurried toward the exit, she heard the frantic clatter of footsteps behind her. She turned around to find Irene running after her, her purple scarf trailing behind. To Ruby's utter shock, the elegant woman collapsed to her knees on the dirty station floor, sobbing hysterically.

"Ruby, please! Please wait!" Irene cried out, her voice cracked with desperation. "I didn't know... oh God, I didn't know it was you!"

Ruby stared at her, completely bewildered. She had never met this woman in her life, yet Irene knew her name. Ruby stepped back, her voice shaking.

"Who are you? How do you know my name?" Ruby asked, clutching her chest.

Irene looked up, her eyes red and filled with immense grief. She confessed a shocking truth. Irene was the grandmother of Liam, Ruby’s fiancé who had tragically passed away from leukemia two years prior. After Liam’s death, Irene had cut all ties with Ruby, bitterly blaming the young girl for surviving while her beloved grandson perished. Irene had convinced herself that Ruby had moved on and forgotten about Liam.

"I saw you from behind, and I recognized your jacket," Irene sobbed. "I wanted to hurt you. I wanted to humiliate you because I thought you were living a happy, healthy life while my grandson was in a grave. I had no idea you were fighting the exact same battle."
