Previously: When Sarah stepped onto the dusty firing range, the instructors laughed at her battered hands. But they didn't know her past—or the deadly secret she was hiding.

The Shadow of Sabotage

As the final echo of the seventh shot faded into the desert canyon, the silence under the wooden awning was absolute. No one moved. Dave slowly lowered his binoculars, his face pale with disbelief. Sarah had not just hit the targets; she had shattered the range's long-standing precision record—a record previously held by Mark himself. The sponsors began to whisper excitedly, their attention shifting entirely to the woman in the olive hoodie.

Mark’s face contorted with a mixture of panic and fury. Sensing his grip on his sponsors slipping, he marched forward, shoving his way to the firing line. He grabbed Sarah’s shoulder, his voice harsh.

"This is a setup! Her hands are ruined; there's no way she did this honestly. She’s using modified ammunition or a cheated scope!"

Dave stepped firmly between them, placing a hand on Mark's chest.

"Back off, Mark. The targets don't lie, and neither does the brass. She did it fair and square."

Mark leaned in close to Sarah, his eyes dark with malice.

"You think this changes anything?" he hissed, low enough so only she could hear. "You try to enter the state qualifiers next week, and I’ll destroy you. I still own your exclusive contract. More importantly, I’ll tell everyone the truth about the night of your car crash. You wouldn't want the sponsors to know you were unstable, would you?"

Sarah felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. For two years, Mark had controlled the narrative, telling the world she had lost control of her car due to panic. But Sarah had spent her recovery doing more than just physical therapy. She had investigated the crash. She looked at Mark, her trembling hands suddenly growing steady as she reached into her pocket for a small, digital voice recorder. She had anticipated this confrontation, and she was ready to expose the darkest secret of all.
