Previously: When Catherine's ex-husband and his wealthy new wife conspired to end her military career, they thought they had won. Years later, they met again at a prestigious gala.

The Confrontation on the Ballroom Floor

The silence in the ballroom was deafening. The sudden bright flash of a photographer’s camera illuminated the sharp contrast between Catherine’s calm resolve and Edward’s sheer panic. To the rest of the high-society crowd, this was a moment of military triumph. To Edward and Victoria, it was the arrival of a reckoning they had spent half a decade trying to outrun.

Edward gripped the edge of his table, his knuckles turning white. He tried to force a polite smile, but his lips only trembled. Victoria leaned in, whispering frantically in his ear, but her words were drowned out by the sudden burst of applause that erupted from the dignitaries. Catherine accepted the microphone from Thomas, her eyes never leaving her ex-husband.

"Thank you, Colonel," Catherine said, her voice steady and commanding. "It is an honor to return to this city, not just as your commander, but as a survivor of the very systems meant to protect us."

A murmur ran through the crowd. Edward felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. He knew exactly what she meant. When they had ruined her, they had used forged documents and bribery to silence anyone who questioned the narrative. Now, she held the ultimate authority over the very contracts Edward’s company relied on to survive.

Catherine stepped down from the stage, walking slowly toward Edward’s table. The crowd watched in fascination, assuming she was simply greeting an old acquaintance. But as she stopped directly in front of him, the temperature in the room seemed to drop.

"You look surprised, Edward," Catherine said, her tone conversational yet razor-sharp. "Did you think a few forged files could keep me down forever?"
"Catherine, please," Edward whispered, his voice cracking as he looked around, desperate to avoid a public scene. "This is not the time or place."
"Oh, I think it is the perfect place," Catherine replied, leaning in slightly. "Because while you were busy celebrating your stolen success, the Inspector General’s office was finishing their investigation into your firm. And tonight, the military police are waiting outside."
