The Confrontation in the Shadows

As the formal ceremony concluded, the ballroom erupted into quiet, urgent whispers. Richard could feel the eyes of the entire room on him. Needing to regain control, he signaled to Eleanor, and the two of them cornered Sarah near the private VIP lounge. Richard’s face was flushed with a mixture of anger and embarrassment.

"What is the meaning of this, Sarah?" Richard hissed, his voice trembling with forced authority. "You think wearing those stars makes you untouchable? I ruined you once, and I can do it again. My family still has connections."

Eleanor stepped forward, her eyes narrow and venomous. "You don't belong here, Sarah. You're just a disgraced officer playing dress-up. We made sure you were thrown out of the service years ago."

Sarah looked at them both, her expression entirely calm. The fear they used to instill in her was gone, replaced by the quiet confidence of someone who had survived the worst they could throw at her. She adjusted her gloves slowly before speaking.

"You didn't ruin my career, Richard. You merely delayed it," Sarah said, her voice cool and steady. "And while you were busy spending your family’s money and bragging about your influence, I was working. I cleared my name before a federal military tribunal. Every single lie you told, every bribe you paid to frame me—it was all uncovered."

Richard tried to scoff, but his confidence was visibly crumbling. "That's impossible. Those records were sealed. You have no proof."

Suddenly, the heavy footsteps of General Edward echoed behind them. He stepped into the light, holding a thick leather folder. He looked down at Richard with cold, military disdain. "Actually, Richard, she has all the proof we need. And so do we."
