Previously: After five years of banishment, Leo returns to his father's ranch with proof of his innocence, only to face a vicious guard dog that holds the key to his family's darkest secret.

A Truth Long Buried

The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the gentle panting of the sleeping Rottweiler in Leo's lap. Mark slowly approached his son, his boots crunching softly on the dry gravel. His eyes darted between the peaceful dog and the young man he had cast out five years ago.

"How did you do that?" Mark whispered, his voice cracking with a mixture of awe and lingering resentment. "She has attacked every trainer I hired. She doesn't let anyone near her."

Leo gently patted Maya's side before slowly standing up, keeping his movements calm.

"Because they tried to break her spirit with chains and anger, Dad," Leo said quietly, looking his father dead in the eye. "She knows what it's like to be treated like a monster just because she's hurting. I know exactly how she feels."

Mark flinched, the guilt of his past actions momentarily flashing across his weathered face. He quickly tried to regain his stern demeanor.

"Why are you here, Leo? I told you never to show your face on this ranch again. The damage you caused..."

"I didn't cause any damage," Leo interrupted, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the worn, yellowed envelope. "I came to give you this. It's Mom's final letter. She wrote it the night of the barn fire, but it was hidden in her old diary."

Mark’s hand trembled as he took the letter. He pulled out the folded paper, his eyes scanning his late wife's familiar handwriting. As he read the desperate words, the color completely drained from his face. The letter detailed how Mark’s own brother, Uncle Thomas, had set the fire to cover up the massive sums of money he had stolen from the ranch's accounts.

"Oh my God," Mark breathed, his knees buckling. "Leo... I... I accused you. I threw you out..."

But before Mark could finish his apology, a shadow detached itself from the darkness of the nearby barn. Uncle Thomas stepped into the fading light, holding a heavy iron tire iron, his face twisted in a desperate, wicked sneer. He had been hiding in the shadows, listening to every word.

"You should have stayed away, Leo," Thomas hissed, stepping closer. "Some secrets are meant to stay buried, and I'm not going to prison for a ruined ranch."
