Previously: Navy Lieutenant Commander Amanda Vance returned home to a hero's welcome, but an unexpected guest at her ceremony was about to blow a fifteen-year-old family secret wide open.

The Shadow at the Altar

Waiting for Amanda at the altar was Mayor Thomas Sterling. He was a man of grand gestures and expensive suits, his silver hair perfectly coiffed. As Amanda stepped onto the raised platform, the mayor smiled warmly, extending his hand. Amanda shook it firmly, her grip tight and professional. The applause subsided, and the mayor stepped up to the mahogany podium, his voice booming through the chapel's sound system.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Mayor Sterling began, his chest puffed with pride. "Today, we welcome home a true daughter of Oakridge. Lieutenant Commander Amanda Vance has faced the harshest oceans and earned the Navy Cross. She reminds us of the resilience of our community. It is my distinct privilege to present her with the Key to the City."

He reached down to open the velvet-lined box on the podium. But before his fingers could touch the key, a sudden draft swept through the church. The heavy side door near the choir loft creaked open, scraping loudly against the stone floor. A hush fell over the congregation as a figure stepped out from the shadows.

The man was thin and weathered, his face etched with deep lines of hardship. He wore a faded, military-surplus field jacket that hung loosely on his frame. Despite his ragged appearance, there was a fierce, undeniable dignity in his posture. Amanda’s breath caught in her throat. The room seemed to lose its air. It was him. It was her father, David Vance.

"Stop this charade, Thomas," David’s voice rang out, raspy but clear. "You have no right to hand out keys to a city you've been robbing for decades."

The chapel erupted into shocked murmurs. Mayor Sterling’s face instantly drained of color, turning a sickly shade of grey. "David?" he gasped, his voice cracking. He quickly recovered, pointing a shaking finger. "Security! Deputies! Remove this trespasser immediately! He is a wanted fugitive!"

Two local deputies hesitated, looking at each other, then at the decorated officer standing in the center of the altar. David didn't run. Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a worn, dusty leather ledger, holding it high for everyone to see.
