The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the gentle breathing of the sleeping dog. Mark stood a few feet away, his chest heaving as his initial panic slowly morphed into a complex mixture of confusion, resentment, and deep-seated anger. "What are you doing here, Leo?"

Mark asked, his voice trembling with a cocktail of emotions.

"You think you can just show up after all this time and play the hero?"

Leo slowly shifted, careful not to wake Maya, and stood up to face his father. "I came because I heard you were going to put her down tomorrow, Dad," Leo said quietly. "She doesn't deserve that. She's not a monster."

Mark let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head.

"You don't know what she's become, Leo! She snapped at the neighbor, she won't let anyone near the old cabin. She's a liability, and I can't risk it anymore. She’s gone wild."

"She isn't wild, Dad. She’s been guarding something,"

Leo replied, his eyes filled with a strange intensity. Before his father could argue, Leo knelt back down by the edge of the weathered porch, right where Maya’s chain dragged through the dirt. He reached deep into the dark crawlspace beneath the cabin, his fingers searching the dry earth.

Mark watched, frowning.

"What are you doing? There's nothing under there but dirt and spiders."

But Leo’s hand struck something solid. With a grunt, he pulled a heavily rusted metal tin box out into the fading light. Mark’s breath hitched. He recognized the floral pattern etched into the rusted lid immediately. It was his late wife Sarah's keepsake box, which they had believed was lost in the chaos after her passing. Maya whimpered in her sleep, as if sensing the box had finally been found.
