Previously: When Mark ran out to stop a stranger from approaching his aggressive, chained Rottweiler, he expected a tragedy. Instead, he uncovered a deep family secret his estranged son had kept for years.

The silence that settled over the ranch yard was suffocating. Mark took a hesitant step forward, his eyes darting between the peaceful animal and the son he hadn't seen in half a decade. The anger that had fueled their estrangement seemed to falter, replaced by a profound, trembling confusion.

The Secret of the Collar

"Leo?"

Mark whispered, his voice barely audible over the rustling dry grass. "What are you doing here? How... how did you do that? She’s tried to tear apart everyone who’s come near her." Leo didn't look up immediately, his fingers gently tracing the soft fur behind Maya's ears. When he finally raised his eyes, they were filled with a mixture of deep sorrow and old resentment.

"She knows Toby, Dad,"

Leo said, his voice cracking. "She was his dog. He rescued her as a pup and kept her hidden at the old Miller barn because he knew you'd never let him keep her. I promised him I’d look after her before... before the accident." Mark recoiled as if struck, his face turning a sickly shade of white. He shook his head violently, refusing to accept the truth that was staring him in the face.

"That's a lie," Mark hissed, his defensive walls slamming back up. "Toby's been gone for five years. This dog is a stray I bought from a breeder down south to protect this property. You’re just trying to manipulate me!" Leo reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a worn, silver collar with Toby's initials crudely engraved on the metal buckle. He placed it gently on the ground. Before Mark could respond, the sound of heavy tires crunching on gravel broke the tension. A dark county vehicle pulled up, and the local veterinarian stepped out alongside a sheriff's deputy, holding a leash and a heavy medical case. The time had come to put Maya down.
