Beatrice’s hand tightened painfully on Richard’s arm. "Richard, this is an obvious scam," she whispered harshly, her eyes darting to the gathering crowd of wealthy guests. "Call security and have them arrested. We have a reputation to protect."

But Richard couldn't look away from the boy, Liam. He turned the photo over. On the back, in his own faded handwriting, were the words: Forever and always, Richie. This was no scam. This was the woman he had loved and lost, the woman he thought had abandoned him for another life. "Where is she, Liam?" Richard asked, his voice trembling.

"She's very sick," Liam cried, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "She's at the community clinic downtown. She told me to find you before it was too late."

Ignoring Beatrice’s furious protests and threats to end the engagement, Richard grabbed Liam's hand and walked out of his own gala.
