Previously: At fifty-nine, Charles finally earned the college degree he sacrificed decades ago. But as he celebrated with his son, a bitter figure from his past arrived to ruin his proudest moment.

A Shadow from the Past

But the euphoria of the moment was short-lived. As Charles, Leo, and Linda made their way toward the exit, a tall, imposing figure stepped out from the crowd, blocking their path. Charles’s smile instantly vanished, replaced by a cold dread that settled deep in his chest. Standing before them was Julian, Charles’s younger brother. Dressed in a flawlessly tailored designer suit, Julian looked entirely out of place among the middle-class families celebrating their achievements.

Thirty years ago, Julian had forged their late father’s signature, stealing the family business and the college fund that was meant to secure Charles’s future. While Julian lived in luxury, Charles had been forced to work grueling, low-paying jobs to survive. Now, after decades of silence, Julian had returned to the one place he was never wanted.

"Well, well, Charles,"
Julian sneered, his voice loud enough to draw the attention of nearby families.
"A bachelor's degree at fifty-nine? What a pathetic joke. You wasted your entire life doing manual labor, and now you think a piece of paper makes you my equal?"

The surrounding crowd fell into an uncomfortable silence. Linda stepped forward, her face flushed with anger.

"Leave him alone, Julian. You have no right to be here,"
she demanded, her voice shaking.

Julian merely chuckled, waving his hand dismissively.

"Actually, I do. As a major donor to this university, I practically funded the department that handed him this pity degree. I wanted to see if my charity was put to good use."

The humiliation was suffocating. Charles felt the familiar sting of worthlessness, the old wounds ripped wide open in front of his peers and professors. He looked down, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his diploma. But before Julian could utter another cruel word, Leo stepped directly between them, his eyes blazing with fury.
