Previously: After handing a box of groceries to a sweet little girl on the street, Arthur followed her into a dark alley—only to discover the devastating truth she was hiding from her family.

The Threat at the Door

Arthur was about to step into the room to offer his help when heavy, aggressive footsteps echoed behind him. He spun around to find a burly man in a worn leather jacket glaring at him. This was Thomas, a ruthless local loan shark who masqueraded as the building’s landlord. Thomas pushed past Arthur, kicking the door wide open and shattering the fragile peace inside the room.

"Time's up, Martha!" Thomas roared. "I told you, you had until tonight to pay off your son's debt, or you and these brats are out on the street!"

The children whimpered, huddling closer to Martha, who trembled violently. Clara bravely stood in front of her grandmother, her tiny fists clenched.

"Please, Thomas," Martha begged, her voice cracking with despair. "My son promised he would send the money. Just give us a few more days. It is freezing outside!"

"I don't care about your son or the weather," Thomas sneered, grabbing a pile of their meager belongings and tossing them into the hallway. "Get out before I throw you out myself."

Arthur could not stand by and watch this cruelty. He stepped between the aggressive man and the terrified family, his pulse pounding in his ears.

"Stop this immediately," Arthur commanded, his voice steady despite his anger. "How much do they owe you?"

Thomas laughed mockingly, sizing up Arthur’s expensive navy blazer.

"Three thousand dollars. And I don't take checks from strangers. Cash only, right now, or they sleep on the pavement."

Arthur didn't carry that much cash, and the banks were closed. Seeing the terror in Clara's eyes, Arthur made a desperate decision. He pulled out the keys to his luxury sedan.

"Take my car," Arthur said. "The title is in the glove box. It is worth far more than three thousand. Keep it as collateral until I bring you the cash tomorrow morning."

Thomas’s eyes gleamed with greed. He snatched the keys and warned Arthur he had until nine the next morning. But as Thomas walked away laughing, Martha looked at Arthur with absolute horror.

"Oh, no," Martha whispered, clutching her chest. "You don't understand. Thomas doesn't just want money. He is working with Clara's estranged father, who wants to take her away to exploit her."
