Previously: Ten years after the love of her life disappeared without a word, Sarah walks past their favorite New York bakery and discovers a heartbreaking secret hidden behind the counter.

The bakery was filled with the rich, comforting scent of fresh cinnamon rolls and dark roast coffee. Sarah took a deep breath, letting the nostalgia wash over her. She walked toward the counter, her eyes scanning the menu board. But when she looked down at the person standing behind the register, her heart stopped. The world seemed to lose its sound.

The Ghost in the Flesh

Standing there, wearing a flour-dusted dark apron, was Julian. He was older now, his jawline slightly sharper and a few threads of silver tracing his temples, but there was no mistaking those deep amber eyes. He was busy packing a box of pastries, but as if sensing her intense gaze, he looked up. When his eyes met hers, he froze. The box slipped from his hands, spilling delicate tarts onto the counter.

"Sarah?" he whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the espresso machine. "Is that really you?"

Ten years of unanswerable questions, sleepless nights, and quiet heartbreak boiled to the surface in an instant. Sarah felt tears hot and angry pricking the corners of her eyes. "Why, Julian?" she demanded, her voice shaking with a decade's worth of pain. "You disappeared without a single word. You left me to pick up the pieces of a life we built together!"

Julian looked panicked, his eyes darting to the few customers watching them. "Sarah, please, I can explain, but not here. It's complicated."

"Complicated?" Sarah scoffed, stepping closer. "You owed me a lifetime, and you gave me silence!"

Before Julian could answer, the door to the back kitchen swung open. A little girl, no older than eight, skipped out holding a wooden spoon. She stopped when she saw the tension in the room. Sarah looked down at the child, and her breath caught. The girl had the exact same striking blue eyes as Sarah—and a small, distinct birthmark shaped like a crescent moon on her left wrist. A birthmark Sarah knew intimately, because she had the exact same one.
