Previously: When General Harold mocked Captain Lauren's abilities in front of her entire unit, he expected her to fail. Instead, her single shot uncovered a conspiracy that changed everything.

The recoil of the rifle vibrated through Lauren's shoulder as the deafening crack of the gunshot echoed across the barren dunes. Through the high-powered lens, she watched the bullet strike its target. But instead of the dull thud of sand or the collapse of an enemy combatant, a sharp, brilliant blue spark erupted from the impact site. It was a highly specific, classified electronic signature—one that Lauren recognized instantly from her specialized intelligence training.

The Unseen Conspiracy

She gasped silently, realizing the target wasn't an infiltrator, but a hidden, active military tracking beacon. This was top-tier classified technology that had supposedly been stolen from their own division months ago. Lauren looked back, expecting General Harold to order an immediate reconnaissance team to secure the device. Instead, she found him staring at her with wide, terrified eyes. The smug expression had vanished, replaced by a pale mask of sheer panic.

"Clear the area immediately!" Harold barked, his voice cracking with uncharacteristic urgency. "It was just a false alarm. A piece of windblown debris!"

The other soldiers quickly dispersed, but Lauren knew the truth. That night, unable to shake the image of the blue spark, she crept out of the barracks to investigate the communications logs. As she neared the command tent, she heard hushed, angry voices coming from within. Peering through a small slit in the heavy canvas, she saw General Harold arguing with an unidentified civilian in expensive clothing.

"The girl hit the beacon," Harold hissed, pacing the floor. "You told me she couldn't shoot in a dust storm!"
"You assured me this outpost was secure," the civilian replied coldly. "She cannot leave this base alive, Harold. Silence her before she contacts high command."

Lauren's heart hammered in her chest. The General was selling state secrets. As she stepped back in shock, her boot struck a loose metal canister, sending a loud clink echoing through the quiet night. The voices inside stopped instantly.
