Previously: After fifteen years of silence, a wealthy businessman returns to the humble food cart where his mother sacrificed everything for his future, carrying a secret that will change their lives forever.

A Threat from the Past

For a fleeting second, the fifteen years of painful separation seemed to dissolve in the warm golden hour light. Thomas wanted nothing more than to reach out and pull his mother into a tight embrace, to whisper the truth he had kept locked away for so long. But the fragile peace of their reunion was shattered by the harsh screech of tires.

A sleek, black town car pulled up to the curb, blocking the crosswalk. The heavy passenger door swung open, and a tall man in a dark trench coat stepped out. Thomas recognized him instantly—it was Arthur, the personal fixer for his biological father, Richard. Arthur’s face was expressionless as he marched toward the food cart, holding a thick manila folder.

Thomas instinctively stepped in front of Linda, but Arthur ignored him entirely, tossing the folder onto the stainless-steel counter of the food cart. It landed with a heavy thud, splashing a few drops of broth onto the papers inside.

"Your father sends his regards, Thomas,"

Arthur said, his voice cold and robotic.

"He warned you that if you ever sought her out, the consequences would be absolute. Effective tomorrow morning, this cart’s vendor permit is revoked, and your mother’s apartment lease has been terminated."

Linda gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as she stared at the official-looking eviction notices spilling from the folder. She looked at the luxury car, then at the expensive suit Thomas was wearing, confusion and a deep, agonizing sense of betrayal washing over her face.

"Thomas... what is he talking about?"

she whispered, her voice cracking.

"What did you do fifteen years ago? Why did you really leave me?"

The trap had been sprung, just as Thomas knew it would be. But Richard had underestimated the son he had tried to control.
