Previously: When my boss literally set our partnership contract on fire during a tense boardroom meeting, he thought my career was over. He didn't realize who was really watching.

The Ultimate Cost

The boardroom froze. The federal agents slowly reached for their holstered weapons, urging Frank to put down the glass. Kevin sat perfectly still, his breath hitching as the jagged glass hovered inches from his neck. Frank was trembling, a desperate man realizing his empire was crumbling around him.

Martha took a slow, deliberate step forward. She didn't look afraid; she looked deeply sad.

"Put it down, Frank," Martha said softly. "It’s already over. And you know who helped us set this up?"

Frank glared at her, his breathing ragged.

"You're lying! Nobody else knew about this meeting!"

Martha shook her head. "Your son, Leo, was the one who installed the hidden cameras. He was the one who copied the encrypted files from your private safe."

The words seemed to strike Frank harder than any physical blow. His hand began to shake violently. Leo was his only son, the boy he had claimed he was building this entire corporate empire for. Frank whispered, his voice cracking,

"Leo? No... he wouldn't betray me."

Martha stepped closer, her eyes filled with pity.

"Leo loves you, Frank. But he told me he couldn't watch his father become a monster. He wanted to save you from yourself before you destroyed anyone else."

The realization washed over Frank like a tidal wave. The anger drained from his eyes, leaving only a broken, hollow shell of a man. The jagged glass slipped from his fingers, clattering harmlessly onto the timber table. He fell back into his chair, burying his face in his hands as the federal agents stepped forward and quietly handcuffed him.

As Frank was led away, Martha stood in the quiet boardroom, looking at the ashes of the burned contract. She had saved her career and secured her future, but the victory felt bittersweet. In the pursuit of wealth and power, the greatest tragedy is often the family we burn along the way.
