Previously: When Sergeant Chris Miller knelt beside a critically wounded soldier in a burning desert canyon, he expected a stranger. Instead, a shocking discovery changed his family forever.

A Dark Family Secret

The medical evacuation helicopter screamed through the sky, carrying them away from the hostile canyon. Throughout the flight, Chris refused to let go of the wounded soldier's hand. He stared down at her pale face, a storm of emotions raging inside him. It was Sarah. His older sister, who had vanished without a trace ten years ago when she was only eighteen. His father had told him she ran away because she hated their family, forbidding anyone from ever speaking her name again.

But as Chris looked at her dog tags, his confusion deepened. The name stamped into the metal wasn't Sarah Miller. It read Sarah Jenkins. She had completely erased her past. Why would she hide her identity and join the military under a false name?

Once they arrived at the field hospital, Sarah was rushed into emergency surgery. Left alone in the sterile, fluorescent-lit waiting room, Chris pulled out his satellite phone and dialed his mother. When she answered, his voice trembled with a decade of unshed tears.

"Mom, I found Sarah," Chris said. "She's here in the desert. She's a soldier, and she's fighting for her life."

There was a long, suffocating silence on the other end of the line. Then, instead of tears of joy, Chris heard his mother gasp in pure terror.

"Chris, you have to leave that hospital right now," his mother whispered, her voice shaking violently. "She is not your sister anymore. If your father finds out you saw her, he will destroy everything."

Before Chris could demand an explanation, the line went dead. His mind reeled. Moments later, the heavy double doors of the waiting room swung open. A man in a dark civilian suit, flanked by two armed military police officers, marched directly toward him.

"Sergeant Miller? You need to come with us immediately," the man said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "This is a matter of national security."
