Previously: When Levi pushed his wife Emilia off a freezing gothic balcony to claim her family fortune, he thought he had committed the perfect crime. He didn't realize someone was watching from below.

The Survivor in the Snow

The fall felt like an eternity, the freezing air tearing at Emilia's periwinkle gown as the dark stone walls of Blackwood Manor rushed past. She braced for the fatal impact, closing her eyes as she plummeted toward the icy ground. But instead of crushing stone, she crashed into a massive, soft snowdrift, immediately followed by the blunt, protective impact of Jude’s body. Jude had thrown himself directly into her path, breaking her fall at the cost of his own safety.

Emilia gasped, her lungs burning from the cold.

"Jude? Are you alright?"
she whispered, coughing as she struggled to sit up in the deep snow.

Jude groaned, his navy coat covered in white.

"I'm bruised, but alive,"
he muttered, his face pale.
"We don't have time, Emilia. Levi and Scarlett think you're dead. They are going to destroy the real deed and sign the forged inheritance papers tonight."

Fueled by a sudden surge of adrenaline and righteous anger, Emilia ignored the pain in her limbs. She allowed Jude to help her up, and together they slipped through a cellar entrance into the warm, dimly lit corridors of the castle. They crept toward her father’s old study, their wet footsteps muffled by the heavy velvet carpets.

Through the cracked door of the study, they saw Levi pouring two glasses of expensive whiskey while Scarlett sat at the mahogany desk, holding a silver lighter over the family documents.

"It's finally ours,"
Scarlett sneered, her strawberry-blonde hair catching the firelight.
"No one will ever know."

Just as Emilia prepared to confront them, her heel slipped on the hardwood floor, sending a loud creak echoing through the silent hallway. Inside the room, Levi froze, his eyes darting toward the door.
