Previously: When Ethan risked his life to pull a freezing wolf from a cracked icy lake, he thought he was alone. But as the pack emerged from the mist, his survival took an unexpected turn.

Surrounded on the Ice

Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs as the shadows materialized into a full wolf pack. Six massive, wild predators stepped onto the frozen lake, their paws crunching softly on the snow. Leading them was a gigantic alpha with a scarred face and piercing yellow eyes. Ethan was completely defenseless; his rifle was back at the cabin, and his hands were far too numb to reach for the small pocket knife in his parka.

The rescued wolf slowly struggled to her feet, whimpering as she limped toward the alpha. They touched noses briefly, a silent exchange passing between them. But the alpha’s gaze remained fixed on Ethan. He let out a low, menacing growl that seemed to vibrate through the very ice beneath them. The other wolves began to circle, cutting off Ethan’s escape route to the shore. He tried to stand, but his legs, soaked in freezing water, refused to cooperate. Hypothermia was setting in rapidly.

"Easy, boy," Ethan whispered, his teeth chattering uncontrollably. "I helped her. I'm not your enemy."

The alpha took another slow, deliberate step forward, his lips curling back to reveal razor-sharp fangs. Just as Ethan braced himself for the worst, a loud, terrifying crack echoed across the lake. A massive fissure split the ice, running directly between Ethan and the alpha. The weight of the pack and the struggle had compromised the surface. The ice beneath Ethan began to tilt slightly, water bubbling up from the crack. He was trapped, freezing to death, and facing a pack of predators who seemed ready to strike at any moment as the ice began to give way.
