The Homeless Boy My Son Pointed Out Held My Whole Forgotten Past
Previously: While walking in the city, Lauren's son points out a homeless boy who looks identical to him. When the boy opens a locket, a dark family secret begins to unravel.
The Shadow of the Past
Lauren brought Isaac back to her warm suburban home. She gave him a hot bath, dressed him in Samuel's clean clothes, and made him a warm meal. Watching the two boys sit side-by-side at the kitchen table, sharing a plate of cookies, was both beautiful and agonizing. The physical proof was undeniable, but the legal reality was a terrifying nightmare. How had her son ended up on the streets, believed to be dead for eight years?
The answer came knocking on her door less than two hours later. When Lauren opened it, she was confronted by two police officers and a man she hoped she would never see again: Dr. Arthur Vance, the wealthy obstetrician who had delivered her twins.

"That's her," Dr. Vance said coldly, pointing a manicured finger at Lauren. "She has my legally adopted ward inside. She took him from the city center."
The officers demanded that Lauren step aside. Dr. Vance produced official adoption papers, signed and stamped by the state court, claiming Isaac had been his legal son since infancy but had recently run away. Lauren stood her ground, her heart hammering.
"He didn't adopt him! He stole him from my delivery room!" she screamed, her voice cracking with desperation.
The police officers looked uneasy but insisted they had to follow the legal documents. As they prepared to escort Isaac out, Lauren desperately scanned the adoption paperwork in the officer's hand. Her eyes locked onto the witness signature at the bottom of the page. It was the signature of her late ex-husband, a man who had left her shortly after the birth. But the date of the signature was three months after her ex-husband had passed away in a tragic accident. The document was a clumsy, desperate forgery.
