Previously: When Abigail fled her past into the freezing Wyoming winter, she expected judgment and exile. Instead, Sheriff Robert offered her shelter—and a chance at a completely new life.

The Shadows of the Past

For two quiet weeks, Abigail found a strange kind of peace in the small mountain town. Under Robert's quiet protection, she began to heal from the trauma of her betrayal. But the illusion of safety was shattered on a Tuesday afternoon when the heavy door of the sheriff’s office was kicked open with brutal force. Three men stepped inside, their heavy coats caked in ice. At the head of the group was Silas, Julian’s most ruthless enforcer.

Silas sneered as his eyes locked onto Abigail. "Well, look what we found," he drawled, tapping the holster at his hip. "The little thief who ran away with the family fortune. We have a warrant to bring you back to Boston, dead or alive."

Robert stood up slowly, his hand resting near his revolver.

"You have no authority in this territory," Robert said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Turn around and walk out."

Silas laughed, gesturing to the window. Outside, five more armed men had surrounded the cabin. They were completely outnumbered. Abigail, terrified of bloodshed, stepped forward to surrender, but Robert held up a hand to stop her. Instead of drawing his gun, he reached into his vest pocket and pulled out an old, tarnished silver pocket watch, tossing it onto the desk in front of Silas.

The moment Silas saw the engraved crest of the watch, his smirk vanished. His face went pale. "Where did you get that?" Silas stammered, taking a step back. "That belonged to the old Senator... Julian's father."

Robert stepped into the light, his eyes flashing with a cold fire.

"It belonged to my father," Robert revealed. "I am Julian's older brother. The one he claimed died in the wilderness ten years ago so he could steal my birthright."
