Previously: When Brenda cornered me in the dusty prison yard, demanding my sneakers, I knew she wasn’t after the shoes. She was after the secret hidden inside them that could set me free.

The Trap in Solitary

Before Brenda could follow through on her threat, the shrill wail of the yard siren pierced the air. The guards, who usually ignored minor squabbles, couldn't overlook a blatant assault right under the watchtower. They swarmed the area, yelling commands and forcing us to the dusty ground. Within minutes, both Brenda and I were hauled away to the administrative segregation unit—otherwise known as solitary confinement. I was thrown into a cold, windowless concrete box with nothing but a steel toilet and a thin cot.

I sat on the edge of the cot, nursing the bruises on my back, but my primary focus was on my shoes. Inside the left shoe's tongue was a hidden micro SD card containing the financial records that could prove my innocence and destroy Brenda’s criminal family. I knew I couldn't stay in solitary forever, and Brenda's reach inside this prison was long. My fears were realized less than an hour later when the heavy iron door creaked open.

It wasn't a sympathetic warden. It was Officer Miller, a corrupt guard whose loyalties had long been bought by Brenda's brother on the outside. He stepped into the cell, shutting the door behind him with a heavy click. In his hand, he carried a pair of standard-issue shower slippers.

"Your friend Brenda paid a very high price to ensure you don't leave this cell with those on," Miller said, pointing his heavy metal flashlight at my feet. "Take them off, Clara. Don't make me do this the hard way."

I backed up against the cold wall, my mind racing. If I fought him, he would take them by force, and the evidence would be destroyed forever. I had to play a dangerous card. I looked up at him, forcing a cold smile to my lips.

"You think Brenda is going to pay you enough to cover a federal conspiracy charge, Miller?" I asked quietly. "Because what is inside these shoes is worth millions. And I'm willing to offer you a much better deal."
