Previously: When Chloe discovers the chilling truth about her father's sudden death in her husband's bag, a romantic weekend getaway turns into a terrifying fight for survival in the freezing mountains.

The Trap Closes In

The beam of a high-powered flashlight swept through the trees, illuminating the falling snow like tiny, silver daggers. Chloe squeezed her eyes shut, her heart hammering against her ribs so violently she was certain they would hear it. Julian’s boots crunched on the other side of the very oak tree she was hiding behind.

"I see her tracks over here, Mark," Julian called out, his voice flat and cold. "She didn't have time to grab her boots. She’s running barefoot or in socks. She won't last another mile in this cold."

Desperation fueled a sudden surge of adrenaline. Chloe looked down and saw a heavy, jagged stone at her feet. Grabbing it, she threw it with all her remaining strength deep into the brush to her left. The stone crashed through the dry branches with a loud, distinct clatter.

"Over there!" Julian shouted, and the flashlight beam immediately swung away from Chloe's tree.

Taking a deep, silent breath, Chloe bolted in the opposite direction. She ran blindly, ignoring the sharp stones cutting into her feet. Suddenly, the ground vanished beneath her. She slid down a steep, rocky ravine, bruising her ribs and scraping her arms before crashing into a shallow, frozen creek bed. Gasping for air, she looked up and saw a small, dilapidated wooden structure nestled in the bank—an abandoned hunter’s blind.

She dragged herself inside the cramped, rotting wooden box, pulling the half-broken door shut behind her. She was trapped, freezing, and utterly exhausted. Within minutes, the flashlight beams danced across the wooden slats of her hiding place. Mark and Julian were standing right outside.

"She has to be in here," Mark muttered, his voice trembling slightly. "Julian, we can't do this. She's my wife."
"She knows everything, Mark," Julian hissed back. "If she gets to the police, we both spend the rest of our lives in a state penitentiary. There is no going back now."
