Previously: When Michael divorced Jessica for not being able to conceive, he quickly moved on with pregnant Clara. But a single piece of paper at a Christmas party changed everything forever.

A Shattering Truth

The silence in the festive living room became deafening as Michael stared at the paper in his hands. The festive music seemed to fade into the background, replaced by the heavy sound of his own breathing. The paper was an official, certified diagnostic report from one of the country's leading fertility specialists. It was dated just days after their divorce had been finalized—the culmination of tests Michael had reluctantly taken but never bothered to follow up on. It stated in absolute, undeniable medical terms that Michael was completely sterile due to a childhood medical condition. He was entirely incapable of biological fatherhood.

Michael’s hands began to shake violently. The charcoal blazer he wore suddenly seemed to suffocate him. He looked up at Jessica, his face pale and his eyes wide with a mixture of horror and confusion.

"This... this is a mistake,"
he stammered, his voice losing all of its previous bravado.
"It has to be. Clara is pregnant. We are having a baby!"

Jessica looked at him, her voice calm and devoid of malice.

"It’s no mistake, Michael. I received the final results right after you walked out on me. I carried the guilt of our empty nursery for years, believing it was my fault because you insisted it was. But the science doesn't lie. You cannot have children."

Slowly, Michael turned his gaze toward Clara. The young woman in the olive green velvet dress was trembling, her smug expression replaced by sheer panic. She took a step backward, her eyes darting frantically around the room, looking for an escape.

"Clara,"
Michael whispered, his voice cracking with a pain that cut through the holiday cheer.
"Tell me this is a lie. If I can't have children... whose baby are you carrying?"

Clara opened her mouth, but no words came out. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked past Michael, her gaze locking onto someone standing near the back of the room. Michael followed her eyes and found himself looking directly at David, his best friend and business partner.
