David’s breath hitched as he stared at the official letterhead of the city’s premier fertility clinic. The document was an official diagnostic report from five years ago—a report David had desperately tried to intercept and hide. It clearly stated his name, his medical ID, and a definitive diagnosis: permanent, irreversible sterility due to a childhood medical condition. He had known all along that he could never biologically father a child, yet he had spent years gaslighting Sarah, letting her shoulder the guilt and shame of their childlessness.

Elena, sensing the sudden shift in the room, grabbed the paper from David's limp fingers. Her eyes darted across the page, and her face went completely white. She looked from the paper to David, her lips parting in silent panic.

"David... what is this?" Elena whispered, her voice trembling. "This has to be a mistake. It’s a fake!"

Sarah took a step closer, her dark red gown catching the light of the fire. "It’s not a fake, Elena," Sarah said, her voice calm and steady. "I noticed the clinic’s name on a hidden medical bill last month and requested a certified copy of the records. David has been sterile since he was a teenager. He knew it. He let me believe I was the broken one to protect his fragile ego."

Sarah then turned her gaze directly to Elena’s pregnant belly. "Which brings up a very interesting question," Sarah continued, a cold smile playing on her lips. "If David cannot have children, whose baby are you actually carrying?"
