Vanessa took off her hairnet and wiped the sweat from her brow, stepping directly into the light. She stared straight into his eyes, her voice trembling but clear.

“Andrew?” she whispered.

The man froze mid-sentence. The arrogant sneer vanished from his face, replaced by a pale mask of sheer terror. He stumbled backward, his eyes darting frantically around the diner. He tried to laugh, claiming she had mistaken him for someone else, and turned to flee toward the exit.

But Vanessa was faster. She grabbed her phone from under the counter and threatened to call the police. That stopped him in his tracks. Andrew knew that if the police arrived, his carefully constructed new life would crumble.

He lunged forward, grabbing Vanessa’s wrist. Stephanie gasped, stepping back in fear.

“Keep your mouth shut, Vanessa,” Andrew hissed, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. “I have a new life now. A wealthy wife, a real estate business. If you ruin this for me, I will destroy you.”

He released her wrist and pulled a thick white envelope from his designer jacket. He tossed it onto the counter, right next to the ruined burger.

“There is ten thousand dollars in cash in there,” Andrew said, his smirk slowly returning. “Take it. Sign a paper promising to never contact me again, and you can pay off your sister’s medical bills. If you don’t, I know the owner of this franchise. I will make sure you are both fired and blacklisted tonight.”

Vanessa looked at the envelope. Ten thousand dollars was more than she made in a year of grueling shifts. It could save them from eviction and finally get Stephanie the medical treatment she desperately needed. But looking at Andrew’s smug face, she realized that taking the money meant letting him walk away unpunished for the devastation he had caused.
