Before Ashley could even scream, Mark broke free from James's hold. Cornered and desperate, he pulled a pocket knife from his jeans, pointing it directly at Ashley. Ashley’s mother shrieked, and her father froze in terror. The brother she had trusted her entire life had turned into a monster right before her eyes.

"Stay back!" Mark yelled, his eyes wild. "You ruined everything, James! She was supposed to be gone by now!"

As the police led a sobbing Mark away in handcuffs, the heavy silence returned to the rustic living room. Ashley’s parents embraced James, weeping and begging for his forgiveness for ever doubting him. Ashley stood frozen, processing the betrayal of her brother, but as James walked over and wrapped his arms around her once more, she knew the nightmare was finally over.
