My Husband Said My Mother's House Was Empty, But My Toddler Saw Someone
Previously: When Sarah visited her late mother's empty home, her toddler pointed out a figure in the glass. What she uncovered inside shattered her marriage and exposed her husband's double life.
The Secret in the Attic
Clutching Lily tightly to my chest, I bypassed the front doors and crept up the creaking wooden staircase. The air grew warmer and increasingly stale as we neared the attic. To my shock, the heavy padlock my mother always kept on the attic door had been removed, replaced by a simple brass latch. I pushed it open slowly, preparing myself for a squatter or a thief. Instead, I stepped into a fully furnished room. It was neat, clean, and filled with modern amenities that contrasted sharply with the rest of the historic house.
On the nightstand sat a framed photograph that made my breath catch. It was my husband, Mark, smiling warmly as he wrapped his arm around a young woman holding a newborn baby. My vision blurred. I recognized the woman—she was the receptionist from Mark’s real estate firm. Before I could process the betrayal, the sound of a car engine roared in the driveway below. I rushed to the small attic window and looked down. Mark’s SUV had parked, and he was helping the same woman and her baby out of the passenger seat.

"Don't worry, sweetie,"Mark’s voice drifted up through the open window.
"Once Sarah signs the papers tomorrow, this place is officially ours, and we won't have to hide anymore."
Panic surged through me. They were coming inside. I scrambled down the stairs, desperate to reach my car, but the front door clicked open before I could reach the foyer. I darted into my mother’s old sewing room, locking the door behind me just as footsteps echoed in the hall. Within seconds, the doorknob rattled violently. "Sarah? I know you're in there," Mark’s voice boomed, stripped of all warmth. "Open the door. We need to talk about the house." The wood groaned as he began to throw his weight against it, while Lily began to sob in my arms.
