Previously: Evelyn woke up to find her husband missing from their luxury estate. But when her mother-in-law arrived with a forged confession, she realized she had been framed.

The Frame-Up

It was Victoria Vance, Evelyn’s formidable mother-in-law, accompanied by a stern-looking man carrying a leather briefcase. Victoria looked up, her eyes cold and calculating as they swept over the empty grand foyer. She didn't look like a mother worried about her missing son; she looked like a predator claiming her territory.

"I see Richard has already departed," Victoria said, her voice echoing off the marble walls. "Which means it is time for you to leave as well, Evelyn."

Evelyn hurried down the stairs, her heart hammering. "What is going on, Victoria? Where is Richard? He’s been missing all night!"

The man with the briefcase stepped forward, opening it to reveal a stack of legal documents. "My name is Arthur Pendelton, counsel for the Vance family trust," he announced. "These documents prove that this estate is owned entirely by the trust, not by your husband. Furthermore, we have evidence of severe financial irregularities."

Victoria smiled, a cruel, triumphant expression. "My son has left the country, Evelyn. And he left behind a signed confession detailing how you embezzled five million dollars from our family firm to fund your lavish lifestyle. The police are already on their way."

Evelyn stared at them in disbelief. It was a setup. Richard hadn't vanished to escape danger—he had fled his family’s mounting debts, using her as the perfect scapegoat. "That’s a lie! I’ve never touched a dime of your money!" she cried.

She realized she needed proof to clear her name before the authorities arrived. Spinning on her heel, Evelyn bolted back up the stairs, locking herself inside the master suite. Behind her, she could hear Victoria’s sharp commands to her security guard to break down the door. Panicking, Evelyn began searching the room, hoping Richard had left some clue behind. Her fingers brushed against a small, hidden latch behind the air vent near the ceiling. She pulled it open and found a black USB drive.
