I Found a Letter From My Late Husband—Only to Realize He Is Still Alive

Driven by a mixture of shock and anger, Chloe drove through a sudden downpour to the coastal address written in the letter. She pulled up to a secluded cottage overlooking the grey, churning ocean. When she knocked, the door opened to reveal Caleb. He was older, his face lined with stress, but it was undeniably him. Before she could scream, a young woman carrying an infant appeared behind him.

"Caleb, who is this?"

the woman asked.

Caleb turned pale, stepping outside and closing the door quickly behind him. Chloe confronted him, her voice cracking with a year's worth of unshed rage.

"You let me bury an empty casket!"

she cried.

"You let me drown in debt while you started a new life!"

But Caleb grabbed her hands, his eyes wild with terror. He explained that the woman inside was his sister, fleeing an abusive situation, and the baby was his niece. He hadn't started a new family. He had faked his death to save Chloe.

Caleb revealed a dark family secret. His wealthy mother, Eleanor, had discovered Caleb’s plan to expose her fraudulent charity. To silence him, Eleanor framed Chloe for embezzlement, threatening to send her to prison unless Caleb disappeared and relinquished his inheritance.

"I did it to protect you, Chloe,"

Caleb wept.

"My mother would have destroyed you."

Just as Chloe began to process the truth, a sleek black SUV pulled into the driveway. The window rolled down to reveal Eleanor’s chilling smile.

"I knew you'd lead her right to him, Chloe,"

Eleanor sneered, holding up her phone.
