Previously: When Ethan pulled a freezing wolf from the icy depths of a remote lake, he thought his fight was over—until the rest of the pack emerged from the winter mist.

The wolves approached with silent, predatory grace. Ethan held his breath, his hand instinctively reaching for the knife at his belt, though he knew it would be useless against four healthy, hunting wolves. He was completely at their mercy. The alpha, a massive male with a scar running across his snout, stepped forward. He sniffed the shivering female, then turned his intense yellow gaze onto Ethan.

Instead of attacking, the alpha nudged Ethan’s shoulder with a surprisingly gentle force, letting out a soft whine. The female he had saved crawled over and licked Ethan's frozen cheek. It was a gesture of profound gratitude. With a low howl, the alpha turned, and the pack vanished back into the misty forest.

The Return of the Pack

Two weeks later, a historic blizzard struck the valley. The temperature plummeted to thirty below zero, and the wind howled like a wounded beast. Ethan was trapped inside his cabin when his old wood-burning stove cracked, filling the cabin with toxic smoke. He was forced to extinguish the fire, leaving him with no heat source in the deadly cold. As hypothermia began to cloud his mind, he heard a frantic scratching at his cabin door.

Using the last of his strength, Ethan dragged himself to the door and pulled it open. Standing in the swirling snow was the female wolf he had saved. She whimpered urgently, grabbing his sleeve with her teeth and pulling him toward the storm.

"What is it, girl?" Ethan muttered, his limbs heavy as lead. "I can't go out there..."

But she wouldn't let go. She tugged harder, her eyes pleading. Realizing she was trying to save him, Ethan wrapped himself in his heaviest coat and stepped into the blinding whiteout. She led him through the deep snow, guiding him toward a sheltered cave in the rocky ridge. But as they reached the entrance, Ethan gasped. Inside the cave, the rest of the pack was waiting, but they weren't alone.
