Previously: When Ethan saved Officer Heather after she collapsed on a suburban street, he expected gratitude. Instead, he found himself in handcuffs, facing a lifetime behind bars for an assault he didn't commit.

A Web of Lies

Instead of helping his partner, Officer Vance grabbed Ethan by the collar of his charcoal grey sweater and slammed him against the hot hood of the patrol car. Despite Ethan's desperate explanations that Heather had simply fainted, Vance handcuffed him tightly, accusing him of a brutal assault. The neighborhood watch watched in stunned silence as Ethan was shoved into the back of the cruiser. Within hours, the narrative was spun. Vance filed a falsified report claiming Ethan had violently attacked Heather during a routine stop, causing her severe head trauma.

Because Heather was placed in a medically induced coma due to a sudden brain aneurysm, she could not speak the truth. Ethan spent three agonizing weeks in a county jail cell, unable to afford the exorbitant bail set by a judge who believed Vance’s lies. The media quickly painted Ethan as a violent offender, and his community turned their backs on him. Only his public defender seemed to harbor any doubts, but even she admitted that without Heather's testimony, the security footage—which only captured Ethan hovering over an unconscious officer—looked damning.

The day of the preliminary hearing arrived. Ethan sat at the defense table, his hands trembling as the prosecutor detailed the severe charges against him. The courtroom was cold and sterile, filled with reporters and hostile police officers. Just as the prosecutor began to wrap up their opening statement, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom creaked open. Officer Heather walked in, pale and frail, but standing tall. She ignored Vance's outstretched hand and took the witness stand. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked at Ethan, then turned to the microphone.

"He didn't... He didn't attack me,"
she whispered, sending shockwaves through the courtroom.
