I Saved a Drowning Wolf from the Ice, and Its Pack Followed Me Home
Previously: When Marcus pulled a freezing wolf from a jagged ice hole, he thought it was a simple act of mercy. He never expected the pack to follow him into the storm.
The Stranded Survivor
The tense standoff lasted only a minute, though to Marcus, it felt like an eternity. The young wolf he had rescued slowly stood up, shook the freezing water from its thick gray coat, and cast one long, lingering look at Marcus. Then, it trotted back to rejoin the pack. As quickly as they had appeared, the wolves vanished back into the dense, white fog, leaving Marcus alone on the ice.
Shaking off the adrenaline, Marcus scrambled to his feet. He knew he needed to get back to his cabin immediately; his clothes were damp, and his body temperature was dropping fast. He climbed back onto his snowmobile and started the engine, steering through the thickening woods. But the weather in the mountains was notoriously volatile. Within thirty minutes, a massive blizzard swept through the valley, reducing visibility to absolute zero.

The wind howled like a wounded animal, throwing blinding sheets of snow against his visor. Marcus tried to navigate the familiar trail, but the blinding whiteout made it impossible. Suddenly, the snowmobile struck a massive, snow-covered boulder. The impact launched Marcus over the handlebars. He crashed violently into a deep snowdrift, a sharp, agonizing pain exploding in his right leg.
When he tried to stand, his leg buckled beneath him. It was broken. To make matters worse, the snowmobile’s engine was completely dead, ruined by the collision. Stranded miles from safety in a sub-zero storm, Marcus dragged himself toward the shelter of a fallen pine tree. Hypothermia was a swift executioner, and Marcus could feel the dangerous warmth of sleep creeping over him.
Just as his eyelids grew heavy, he heard the soft, rhythmic crunch of paws on the frozen snow. Through the swirling white darkness, a dozen pairs of glowing eyes emerged. The pack had returned. They circled his helpless body, and the massive alpha wolf stepped forward, baring its teeth.
