Previously: When a disgraced young sniper is given one final, impossible shot to save her captured mentor, she must face her deepest fears and pull the trigger against all odds.

A Treacherous Intervention

The bullet traveled for what felt like an eternity, slicing through the shimmering heat waves. Through her scope, Emily watched as the hostile commander fell, instantly halting the enemy's advance. David let out a low breath of disbelief beside her, but there was no time to celebrate. Two more enemy combatants rushed forward, aiming heavy rocket-propelled grenades at the pinned-down patrol. Emily quickly adjusted her aim for the second target, her finger resting on the trigger once more.

Suddenly, a heavy boot slammed into the side of the wooden crate, throwing off her alignment. A rough hand grabbed the barrel of her rifle, pulling it upward. Emily spun around, her hand instinctively going to her sidearm. Standing over her was Lieutenant Miller, the commanding officer who had led the charge to strip her of her rank after her previous failure.

"What do you think you're doing, soldier?" Miller roared, his face flushed with anger. "You are relieved of duty! Step away from the weapon immediately before I have you arrested!"

Emily stared at him, her mind racing. She looked past him to the tactical map spread across the command table. The coordinates of David's patrol were highlighted, but they were marked in a zone that was supposed to be completely clear of enemy activity. Miller had personally signed off on the route, claiming it was safe. Now, he was actively preventing her from defending them.

"Sir, Sergeant David's team is going to be wiped out if I don't clear those heavy weapons," Emily argued, her voice steady but fierce. "I have the target in my sights."
"You've already proven you can't handle the pressure, Emily," Miller sneered, stepping between her and the rifle. "I won't let a disgraced sniper compromise this outpost. Stand down. That is a direct order."

It was then that Emily saw the subtle tremor in Miller's hands. He wasn't trying to protect the outpost; he was trying to cover his tracks. He had intentionally sent the patrol into an ambush to eliminate David, who had been investigating supply discrepancies. If Emily saved them, the truth would come out. She was facing a choice that would define her life: obey a corrupt commander, or commit mutiny to save her brother-in-arms.
