Previously: When military instructor John told sniper Sarah that a two-thousand-yard shot was impossible, he didn't realize the target held the key to her family's darkest secret.

A Ghost in the Crosshairs

John gasped, lowering his binoculars in sheer disbelief. "I don't believe it," he muttered, looking at Sarah as if she were a ghost. "You actually bypassed the wind shear." But their moment of triumph vanished in an instant. As the freed American soldiers scrambled toward their rescue humvee, a lone figure emerged on the compound's flat roof. The man was hauling a Soviet-era rocket launcher, aiming it directly at the fleeing vehicle. Among those soldiers was Private First Class Leo Kelly, Sarah’s younger brother.

Sarah quickly adjusted her scope, her heart hammering against her ribs. She prepared to take the lethal shot, but as the image focused, her finger froze on the trigger. The man on the roof was wearing a tattered American military jacket. On his wrist was a tarnished silver watch—a watch Sarah had personally engraved for her oldest brother, Marcus, who had been declared missing in action five years ago.

"Marcus?" she whispered, her vision blurring. Her hands began to shake, the rifle barrel wavering. John noticed the sudden instability immediately.

"What are you doing, Kelly? Take the shot! He’s going to blow the humvee!" John yelled, his voice rising in panic as he reached to grab her rifle.

Through the scope, Marcus did something unexpected. He paused, looked directly toward their distant outpost, and flashed a childhood hand signal. It was a warning: It's a trap. Sarah realized that if she fired, she would kill her brother. If she didn't, Leo would die. John lunged forward, trying to wrest control of the weapon from her hands. "Let me take it!" he growled, forcing his weight onto the rifle.
