My Instructor Called the Shot Impossible but My Brother’s Life Was on the Line
Previously: When my instructor told me a two-thousand-yard shot was impossible, he didn't know my brother's life hung in the balance. I had one bullet to prove him wrong.
Blinded by the Storm
Three agonizing seconds passed before the impact. Through the glass, Sarah saw the lead insurgent drop. John gasped, his grip tightening on her shoulder. "My God, Sarah... you actually did it. You neutralized the threat." But the victory was short-lived. The remaining captors panicked, immediately dragging Leo toward the vehicle to use him as a human shield. Sarah quickly recalibrated her aim, but before she could lock onto the second target, a violent gust of wind swept through the canyon, bringing a massive wall of blinding sand with it.
Within seconds, the target area was completely swallowed by a thick, swirling vortex of orange dust. Her thermal scope was useless against the dense wall of grit. "Stop! Stand down!" John ordered, his voice rising in panic as he tried to pull her away from the rifle. "You're completely blind! If you fire now, the wind could carry that bullet right into your brother. I am ordering you to stop!"

Sarah knew the risks better than anyone. But she also knew that if the vehicle started moving, Leo was dead anyway. She closed her eyes, visualizing the layout of the canyon, the speed of the vehicle, and the rate of the wind's shift. She had to rely on pure calculation and instinct. Disobeying a direct order from a legendary commander could end her career, but letting her brother die would end her soul.
Ignoring John's shouting, she placed her finger back on the trigger. She took a deep breath, held it, and fired into the blinding void of the storm. The shot echoed loudly, disappearing into the howling wind. For a long, terrifying minute, there was only silence. Then, the radio on John’s vest crackled to life with the frantic voice of the extraction team scout.
