Previously: When Michael followed a starving little girl into a dark alleyway, he expected to hand out some charity—but a heartbreaking lie led him straight to a face from his past.

The Ghost of the Past

Unable to witness their suffering any longer, Michael stepped through the door frame into the dim, cold room. The floorboards creaked beneath his expensive leather shoes. At the sound, the elderly woman gasped, instinctively pulling the children closer to her chest. But as the flickering lightbulb illuminated Michael's face, her defensive posture softened into absolute disbelief. She stared at him, her eyes wide, her lips trembling as she whispered a name she hadn't spoken in fifteen years.

"Michael? Is that... is that really you, my boy?"

Michael froze. He looked closely at the deeply lined face, the gentle eyes, and the familiar, caring expression beneath the dirt and exhaustion. A flood of memories rushed over him. This was Hazel. She was the loyal housekeeper who had raised him with maternal warmth after his own mother passed away. His cold, ruthless father had abruptly fired her fifteen years ago, falsely accusing her of theft to avoid paying her pension, and had banned Michael from ever contacting her. Michael had spent years searching for her once he became independent, but she had vanished into the city's poorest slums.

"Hazel," Michael choked out, falling to his knees on the cold floor. "I've been looking for you for so long. Why are you living like this?" Tears rolled down Hazel's weathered cheeks as she explained how his father's blacklist had ruined her life, preventing her from finding work, and how her daughter's passing had left her to care for her grandchildren alone. But before Michael could comfort her, a heavy shadow fell across the doorway. A burly, hostile man holding a thick wooden club stepped into the room. It was the ruthless slumlord who owned the building.

"Time's up, old woman,"
the man sneered, tapping the club against his palm.
"You're behind on rent, and I don't care about your excuses. You and these street rats are out of here tonight!"
