Previously: When wealthy Richard Vance saw a shivering orphan staring through a restaurant window, he was about to turn away—until a familiar silver locket around the boy's neck changed his life forever.

The Confrontation in the Cold

Ignoring the startled gasps of the surrounding diners, Richard bolted from the table. He pushed past the maître d’ who tried to ask if everything was alright, and threw open the heavy glass doors. The freezing wind and torrential rain hit him instantly, soaking his expensive suit, but he didn't care. He scanned the dark street, but the boy, startled by the sudden commotion, was already running down the alleyway.

"Wait! Please, stop!" Richard cried out, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt in years.

The boy tripped on the slick pavement, falling onto his hands and knees. Before he could scramble back up, Richard was there, gently kneeling in the wet grime beside him. He reached out, his hands trembling as he touched the boy's shoulder. The child flinched, looking up with wide, terrified eyes.

"Please don't hurt me, mister! I was just looking, I swear!" the boy whimpered, his teeth chattering.
"I'm not going to hurt you," Richard said softly, his voice thick with tears. "Where did you get that locket around your neck, son?"

The boy looked down, his small fingers clutching the silver piece tightly. "It was my dad's. He died when I was little. My mom passed away last month, and she told me to find the man who owned the matching crest... but I didn't know where to go."

Before Richard could process the overwhelming realization that this was his grandson, a sharp voice cut through the storm. It was Edward, Richard’s greedy nephew and business partner, holding a large umbrella. He looked at the dirty child with absolute disgust.

"Uncle Richard! What is the meaning of this madness?" Edward sneered. "Get away from that street rat. He’s obviously a scammer trying to target you. I’m calling the police to have him dragged away."

Edward reached out to grab the boy, but Richard stood up, placing himself protectively in front of his grandson. The battle lines were drawn in the freezing rain.
