Underneath the low-brimmed cap and behind the dark glasses of the videographer were the unmistakable hazel eyes of Clara's husband, Sergeant David Miller. Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth to stifle a scream. He was supposed to be in that maple casket. The military had told her he died in a tragic, classified training accident. Yet, here he was, breathing and kneeling to stroke Buster's ears in that familiar, loving way only he knew.

Before Clara could move, Captain Thomas, the commanding officer standing at attention behind the casket, broke his stance. His eyes locked onto the videographer, and a look of cold, calculating rage crossed his face. Thomas reached slowly for his sidearm, whispering a sharp command to the other two officers.

"Secure the perimeter. Don't let him leave this room," Thomas hissed, his voice cutting through the solemn silence.

David realized his cover was blown. He looked directly at Clara, a mixture of profound love and desperate urgency in his eyes. He quickly unclipped a small, heavy silver USB drive from his key ring and slipped it into Buster's collar. With a sharp whistle, he commanded the dog to return to Clara. Buster bolted back to Clara's side just as the military police and Captain Thomas began to close in on the back of the hall.

David turned and sprinted through the side emergency exit, throwing the heavy doors open into the bright afternoon light. The officers rushed past Clara in hot pursuit, leaving her alone in the chapel with Buster and the empty casket. Her hands trembled violently as she reached down and detached the USB drive from Buster’s collar. She knew she had to get home immediately.

Hours later, locked inside her dark living room, Clara plugged the drive into her laptop. A video file opened, revealing David speaking directly to the camera from a safehouse. He warned her that Captain Thomas was corrupt, and that she was now in grave danger.
