Previously: When Detective Leo Vance's loyal K9 partner Buster barks at his casket and drops a hidden clue, his grieving widow uncovers a chilling conspiracy within the police department.

The Trap Closes In

Clara’s fingers instinctively closed around the metallic badge, sliding it and the tiny micro-SD card deep into her heavy winter coat. She tried to keep her breathing steady, but the sudden rush of adrenaline made her ears ring. She looked up from Buster, attempting to maintain a facade of grief, only to find Marcus Reed staring directly at her. The stoic expression on his face had vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating panic. He knew exactly what Buster had just delivered to Clara.

Leaving his post at the back of the hall, Marcus walked slowly toward her, his heavy boots clicking against the marble floor. The other three officers immediately shifted their positions, subtly blocking the exit doors of the memorial hall. The few family members who had attended the service were already heading toward the reception hall next door, leaving Clara entirely isolated.

"Clara," Marcus said, his voice a low, threatening whisper as he stopped just inches away from her. "I need you to hand over whatever the dog just gave you. It’s official police evidence, and keeping it is a federal crime."

Clara took a step back, her hand resting on Buster's head. The loyal retriever let out a low, warning growl, his hackles rising. "It's just Leo’s old badge, Marcus," Clara lied, her voice shaking despite her best efforts. "I want to keep it to remember him."

Marcus’s hand drifted toward his holster. "Don't make this difficult, Clara. We both know Leo was digging into things he shouldn't have. Just give me the card, and we can all walk out of here as friends."

Realizing she was cornered, Clara looked down at Buster and whispered the secret command Leo had taught him for emergencies: "Distract!" Instantly, Buster barked furiously and lunged toward Marcus, not to bite, but to knock him off balance. Marcus stumbled backward with a curse, and Clara seized the split second to sprint toward the side exit, pushing through the heavy doors into the pouring rain. She scrambled into her car, locking the doors just as Marcus and the other officers emerged from the building, their faces twisted in rage.
