Previously: When Clara was publicly humiliated at an elite gala for her horrific scars, she thought her life was over. But a surprise military arrival changed everything.

The Ghost of the Past

The silence in the ballroom was absolute. William's face drained of color as he realized the magnitude of his mistake. The woman he had just ordered his security to throw out like trash was Captain Clara Sterling, a decorated special forces veteran. Admiral Vance slowly lowered his salute and turned a freezing glare toward William and Victoria.

"This woman bore those scars saving American lives in a burning wreckage,"
the Admiral said, his voice cutting through the room like a blade.
"And you treat her like a circus attraction."

William began to stammer, his hands shaking. His multi-million dollar logistics empire relied almost entirely on government and military contracts. With one word, Admiral Vance could ruin him.

"Admiral, please, we didn't know,"
William pleaded.
"It was a misunderstanding!"
But Vance ignored him, gently placing his own heavy, medal-adorned military jacket over Clara's trembling shoulders. Clara looked at the Admiral, her eyes filled with emotional relief. The nightmare of hiding her past was finally over—or so she thought.

As the Admiral began to escort Clara out of the ballroom, a figure stepped out from the shadows near the grand entrance. It was Julian, Clara's ex-fiancé. Years ago, when Clara had returned from the war zone covered in bandages and scars, Julian had abandoned her, calling her "damaged goods." Now, seeing her flanked by the highest-ranking military official in the state, a greedy glint shone in his eyes. He held a thick manila folder in his hand.

"Not so fast, Clara,"
Julian said, a smug smile plastered across his face.
"You might be a war hero, but you still signed the non-disclosure and asset waiver when we parted. According to this contract, any military pension or government compensation you received during your recovery belongs to my family's firm. If you walk out of here, I'll sue you for every dime you have."
Clara's heart sank as she stared at the man who had broken her heart, now trying to steal her survival.
