Previously: When Sarah caught her mother-in-law Eleanor tampering with her baby's nursery, she never expected a violent assault—or the chilling family secret that would soon shatter their lives.

The Web of Lies Escalates

After Justin forced Eleanor out of our home, we immediately rushed Toby to the nearest pediatric emergency room. My hands shook as I handed the baby's formula bottle to the nursing staff. Within an hour, our worst fears were confirmed: Eleanor had been putting mild sedatives into Toby's milk. She wanted him quiet, docile, and she wanted me to look like an incompetent mother who couldn't keep her child awake. Justin sat in the hospital chair, his head in his hands, weeping silently at his mother's cruelty.

But Eleanor was already three steps ahead of us. When we returned home later that evening, we were met by two police cruisers and a child protective services caseworker. Eleanor stood on our front porch, wearing her navy blue sweatshirt, looking like a victim herself. She had filed an emergency report, claiming that I was the one drugging Toby, and that she had attacked me in the nursery only to save her grandson. She even presented a forged journal, supposedly in my handwriting, detailing my struggles with postpartum depression and resentment toward my baby.

The caseworker looked at us with deep suspicion.

"Until we can verify the source of the substances found in the child's system, we may have to place Toby in temporary foster care—or with his grandmother,"
the caseworker explained. Eleanor smirked behind the officer's back. I felt the world spinning. She was going to take my baby.

Just as the police prepared to take Toby, our family attorney, Arthur, arrived. He had been Justin's late father's closest confidant. Arthur held a sealed manila envelope and a key.

"Before anyone makes any arrests, you need to see what was left in the late Mr. Vance's private safe deposit box,"
Arthur announced. He opened the envelope, revealing a series of legal documents and a DNA test from thirty years ago. As Justin read the first page, his face drained of all color, and he looked up at Eleanor with utter disbelief.
