Previously: When Hailey's mother-in-law violently attacked her in the nursery, she thought it was just jealousy. But the next morning, a shocking document revealed a much darker plot.

The Forged Betrayal

The relief of Diane’s departure was tragically short-lived. Though Cody spent the evening holding me and apologizing for his mother’s unstable behavior, the next morning brought a fresh nightmare. At exactly seven in the morning, a pounding on our front door shattered the quiet. Cody opened it to find two police officers standing on our porch, with Diane hovering triumphantly behind them, clutching a thick manila folder.

The officers entered our living room, explaining that Diane had filed an emergency petition for temporary custody of Liam, claiming I was an unfit, abusive mother. But the real blow came when Diane stepped forward and tossed a document onto the coffee table. "He isn't even your son, Cody," she said, her voice cold and calculating. "Show him the truth, officers."

The document was a certified report from a local fertility clinic, dated five years ago, stating that Cody suffered from permanent, absolute infertility. I stared at the paper, my breath catching in my throat. "This is impossible! Cody, we never even went to this clinic!" I cried, reaching for his hand. But Cody’s hand was cold, and his face had gone completely white. He stared at the document, his eyes filled with a sudden, agonizing doubt. He looked at me, then back at the paper, his silence deafening.

Diane smiled, a predatory gleam in her eyes. She claimed Cody had been tested as a teenager and had hidden the results out of shame. The police officers explained that with a certified medical document raising paternity questions alongside Diane's allegations of my unstable environment, they had to take the petition seriously. Cody stood up, walking away from me toward the window. "Is it true, Hailey?" he whispered, his voice cracking. My husband, the man who had saved me the day before, was now looking at me like I was a liar, while my baby’s future hung by a thread.
