Previously: When Clara's mother-in-law triumphantly burned what she thought was the only copy of a life-changing will during dinner, she thought she'd won. She had no idea Clara was one step ahead.

The Smug Betrayal

The echoing laughter of her mother-in-law and brother-in-law vibrated through Clara’s chest, turning her shock into a cold, hard anger. She looked at her husband, Mark, desperately seeking a shred of support, but he quickly averted his eyes, staring down at his hands. The betrayal cut deeper than any flame ever could. Mark had known about this plan all along.

"It’s over, Clara," Helen sneered, brushing her hands together as if wiping away the dust of Clara's future. "Without that original document, you have no legal claim to this estate. The backup copies you have mean nothing without the notarized original. You’re going to pack your bags, and you’re going to leave my son."

Steve chuckled, pouring himself another glass of wine. "You really thought you could come into our family and inherit everything? You're a nobody, Clara. Go back to where you came from."

Clara slowly lowered her hands from her face. She looked at the three of them, her expression shifting from devastation to a calm, steady resolve. She stood up, smoothing down her red sweater. The smug smiles on Helen and Steve’s faces began to falter slightly at her sudden composure.

"You think you’ve destroyed my life," Clara said, her voice quiet but carrying an undeniable strength. "But you’ve only destroyed yourselves."

Clara reached into her purse and pulled out her smartphone. She turned the screen toward them, showing a live-stream interface. Hidden inside the brass chandelier above them was a tiny, high-definition security camera, streaming everything directly to a secure cloud server. But that wasn't the only trap she had set for her greedy in-laws. She looked directly at Helen, whose triumphant smile was rapidly fading into a mask of pure panic.
