Previously: When Emily and Thomas tied the knot, they thought they had overcome the worst. But a shocking altar interruption from Thomas's mother revealed a dark secret about the accident that paralyzed them both.

The Shadow of the Past

The echoes of applause had barely faded when a harsh, commanding voice cut through the sacred space. "Stop this wedding immediately!" Victoria, Thomas’s mother, stood at the back of the chapel, her face contorted with anger. She marched down the aisle, her designer heels clicking sharply against the stone floor, holding a yellowed manila folder like a weapon. The guests gasped, and an uncomfortable murmur rippled through the pews.

Thomas’s face darkened with frustration.

"Mother, what are you doing? Sit down,"
he warned, his voice tight. But Victoria ignored him, marching straight to the altar and pointing a manicured finger at Emily. "I will not let my son marry the daughter of the monster who ruined his life!" she shrieked, pulling a police report from the folder and tossing it onto Emily’s lap. "That girl’s father was the drunk driver who caused your accident five years ago, Thomas! He fled the scene and left you paralyzed!"

Emily felt the color drain from her face. Her father had died when she was a child, long before the accident, but Victoria’s conviction was terrifying. With trembling hands, Emily unfolded the paper. Thomas leaned over, his eyes scanning the official document. But instead of rage directed at Emily, Thomas’s expression morphed into absolute horror. His knuckles turned white as he gripped his wheelchair.

"Mother... this isn't Emily's father,"
Thomas whispered, his voice trembling.
"This is the registration for a vehicle owned by your private holding company. Why was your company car at the scene of my accident?"
Victoria’s triumphant smirk instantly vanished, her face turning a ghostly shade of white as she took a step back.
