My Brother Destroyed Our Mother’s Table in a Rage, Uncovering a Fifty-Year-Old Lie
Previously: When Richard flew into a violent rage and smashed our mother's antique dining table, he thought he was punishing her. Instead, the splintered wood revealed a secret she had hidden for decades.
Unearthing the Truth
The echo of the shattering wood died down, replaced only by Margaret's soft groans and Richard's heavy, ragged breathing. Amanda broke out of her paralysis, rushing forward to pull her sobbing mother away from the jagged pieces of the ruined table. "Mom! Oh my god, Mom, are you okay?" Amanda cried, her hands shaking as she helped Margaret sit up on the floor.
Richard stood over them, his chest heaving, but his violent fury suddenly gave way to confusion. As he looked down at the wreckage of the table, he noticed something strange. The thick center pedestal of the antique table had a hollow core, and the violent impact had split it wide open. Tucked inside the secret compartment was a dusty metal box, its lock rusted through and broken by the crash.

Before Amanda could stop him, Richard kicked a broken table leg aside and snatched the box. He pried it open, revealing a stack of faded letters tied with a blue ribbon and a thick, black leather ledger. Margaret’s eyes widened in sheer panic. She reached out a trembling hand, her voice a desperate whisper.
"Richard, no... please. Leave it alone. You don't know what you're doing," she begged.
Ignoring her, Richard pulled out the top letter. As his eyes scanned the elegant, cursive handwriting, the color drained from his face. The letter was from Thomas Vance, the wealthiest and most powerful businessman in their town. It was dated thirty years ago, addressed to Margaret. It spoke of a secret affair, a child born in silence, and a massive sum of money deposited into a private trust fund to keep the truth from Margaret's late husband.
Richard flipped open the ledger, finding a bank book detailing a balance of nearly half a million dollars, held in trust for him. His eyes burned with a mixture of shock and renewed, icy rage.
"You lied to me my whole life," Richard whispered, his voice trembling. "You let me believe I was a nobody, let me starve and struggle, while you sat on a fortune?!"
Before Margaret could answer, a sharp, heavy knock rattled the front door, cutting through the suffocating tension of the room.
