Previously: Framed for a crime she didn't commit, Clara's only hope lay hidden inside her late brother's sneakers. But when the prison's most feared inmate corners her, a shocking secret changes everything.

The Midnight Trap

The tense standoff in the yard was suddenly cut short by the loud blare of the prison siren, signaling an emergency lockdown. Brenda slowly released her grip on Clara's collar, whispering a final threat before the guards rushed in to disperse the crowd. Back in her damp, cramped cell, Clara sat on the edge of her bunk, her hands trembling. She knew time was running out. Inside the thick sole of her left sneaker was a microchip containing the encrypted ledger of the syndicate that had framed her for her brother's murder.

As night fell, the prison became eerily quiet. Clara desperately tried to pry open the heavy stitching of her sneaker, but without a tool, it was impossible.

Hours later, the heavy metal door of her cell slid open with a soft click. It wasn't the morning shift. Standing in the dim corridor was Officer Miller, a corrupt guard known to be on the syndicate's payroll. He gave Clara a cold smirk before walking away, leaving her door completely unsecured.

Moments later, a shadow blocked the moonlight. Brenda stepped into the cell, a crude, sharpened piece of metal in her hand. Behind her, two of her loyal enforcers stood guard in the hallway.

"I told you that you'd regret it, Clara," Brenda said, her voice a low rumble in the dark. "Now, give me the shoes, or I'll take them from your cold body."

Clara backed into the corner, raising her fists. She was terrified, but she was done running. She prepared for the violent struggle, knowing she was completely outnumbered and outmatched. Brenda stepped closer, raising the makeshift weapon, her eyes locked onto Clara's sneakers.
