As Brenda held her pinned against the fence, the tension in the yard reached a boiling point. The surrounding inmates watched in silence, knowing better than to interfere. Brenda leaned closer, her breath hot against Clara's ear.

"I know what you're carrying, Clara," Brenda hissed. "Marcus paid me a visit before I got transferred. He told me you had a little souvenir from your old firm. Hand over the shoes, and maybe you'll survive your sentence."

Clara’s heart seized. Marcus, her former business partner who had framed her for embezzlement, had found a way to reach her even inside these walls. The sneakers held a micro-SD card sewn into the inner sole, containing the original ledger files that proved Marcus was the real thief. If Brenda got her hands on them, Clara would lose her only chance at exoneration.

"He's using you, Brenda," Clara gasped out, struggling for breath. "Once he gets those files, he won't pay you a dime. He'll make sure you never talk."

Brenda hesitated for a fraction of a second, her grip loosening slightly. But greed and anger quickly took over.

"I'll take my chances,"

she growled, raising her fist to strike.

Before the blow could land, a shrill whistle pierced the air. Two guards rushed toward them, batons drawn. They tore Brenda away, throwing her to the gravel, while another guard grabbed Clara. Both women were dragged toward the solitary confinement wing.

Locked in the dark, damp isolation cell, Clara sat on the concrete bench. She knew she was out of time. The guards in this block were notoriously corrupt, and it was only a matter of hours before Marcus's money bought Brenda access to her cell. She had to get the micro-SD card out of the prison immediately, but she was completely cut off from the world.
